Today we are celebrating Earth Day. But did you know what that means? This day’s main objective is to create a common awareness of problems such as contamination, conservation of biodiversity, pollution and others. Several actions are carried out in schools, universities and other spaces around the world with a single objective.
But How Did It Start?
On April 22, 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson, who was also an environmental activist, created a demonstration in favor of creating an environmental agenda, which was attended by thousands of people. Social pressure worked and the United States government created the Environmental Protection Agency. And only in 1972 was the first international conference on the environment celebrated: the Stockholm Conference.
What Is It For?
Earth Day is not about political, national, religious or ideological claims. It is about becoming aware of the Earth’s natural resources and their management, environmental education and the participation of environmentally conscious and responsible citizens. And on that day, everyone is invited to participate in activities that promote the health of our planet, both globally, regionally and locally.
Curiosity:
Despite being celebrated every year on the same date since 1970, that day was not recognized by the UN until 2009, when it finally recognized the importance of the date and instituted Earth Day, celebrated on April 22.
