The 2020 Grammy nominees list is out and everybody is all over it. Sure, there are some familiar names, like Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift. But what really stands out are the newcomers, even though some of them have been around for a while. Here are five Best New Artist nominees you should definitely keep up with from now on.
Lizzo is one of the biggest breakout names of 2019. While “Truth Hurts” was released in 2017, it became a major hit this summer after being featured on a Netflix film called “Someone Great”. Her music brings us feel-good pop songs, full of messages of self-love and positivity, vulnerability and strength.
Maggie Rogers’s big break came when a video of Pharrell Williams tearing up to her song during a masterclass at NYU went viral a few years ago. Early this year, she released her debut studio album, called “Heard It In A Past Life”. One of the singles, “Light On” is a letter to her fans about the changes in her life since the viral video and how overwhelming it all was.
Billie Eilish’s debut album, released last March, cast her as one of the top new artists of 2019. “bad guy”, the fifth single, even snagged the first spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. She stands out as a perfect mix of edgy and pop, with an ironic, self-aware tone to her lyrics and a fresh new sound.
One of the top Grammy nominees, Rosalía, has found great success in the past couple of years. The Spanish singer was nominated for a Best New Artist award at the 18th Latin Grammy Awards in 2017 with her first studio album, called “Los Ángeles”. Since then, she has become internationally known and even partnered with other famous singers, like James Blake and Pharrell Williams. Rosalía’s music mixes modern flamenco sounds with reggaeton, R&B and hip-hop beats. She currently holds five Latin Grammy Award wins and is the first female winner of their Album Of The Year category since 2006.
Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X became a viral sensation after “Old Town Road” became wildly popular. The song held the number one position on the US Billboard Hot 100 and for a record-breaking nineteen weeks. His debut EP is made up of 8 songs (including the “Old Town Road” remix with Billy Ray Cyrus) that are catchy and playful.
