Today is National Moon Day! But do you know why we celebrate it? Well, in this post we will tell you the history behind National Moon Day. In addition, we will also tell you some curiosities about the astronauts! Let’s get started.

July 20, 1969

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first Americans to land on the moon. Not only were the first Americans, but they were also the first humans to go to the moon. It was historical. So, since 1969, we celebrate this important conquest.

The Apollo 1 crew spend 21 hours on the Moon. This historical event was filmed and transmitted to more than 600 million people. Until today, this event scored the biggest audience in TV history.

Neil Armstrong

Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. His most famous quote is: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”.Also, Neil was the commandant of Apollo 11, the American expedition organized by Nasa. Neil Armstrong died in 2021, at age 82.

Buzz Aldrin

Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr known as Buzz Aldrin was the second man to land on the moon. After the mission, the astronauts became celebrities. But that harmed Buzz. He fought against depression and alcoholism and tells all that in his biography. Today, Buzz has 91 years old.

US astronaut Edwin ‘Buzz’ Eugene Aldrin (born 1930) was a military pilot with a doctorate in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he joined NASA’s Astronaut Corps in 1963. He was part of the Gemini program, and then selected for the Apollo program. As the lunar module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission, Aldrin was the second person to walk on the lunar surface, doing so on 21 July 1969 with Neil Armstrong. After retiring from NASA in 1971, Aldrin published accounts of his experiences in space and has lectured worldwide on the topic. Photographed in July 1969.
