A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place is a thriller by first-time director John Krasinski (famous for playing Jim Halpert on The Office). It is set on a post-apocalyptic world where a family has to live in silence, hiding from blind monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing. Krasinski also stars in the movie alongside award-winning actress Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. It was a major box office hit and some pretty good accolades. A sequel is currently under development and is supposed to be released on March 20, 2020.

The Big Sick (2017)

The Big Sick tells the love story of Kumail and Emily. When she gets sick, they are forced to learn to navigate the differences in their cultures. The movie nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, and loosely based on their real-life romance. And the American Film Institute also chose The Big Sick as one of the top 10 films of 2017.

Paterson (2016)

This movie tells the story of a week in the life of Paterson, a bus driver and poet. It is an ode to the ups and downs of daily life, looking at the poetry in the details. Adam Driver, who plays the title role, received much praise for the film. Paterson competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, and Nellie, the dog from the movie, won the Palm Dog Award.

Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Dungeons and Dragons (2019)

Dungeons & Dragons has been around since 1974 and it is one of the most popular RPG games out there. Eye of the Beholder is the story behind the art of D&D, with more than 40 interviews with the artists, insiders and fans. The documentary started as a Kickstarter project and hit the funds goal in just 72 hours! It was eventually screened at the Gen Con 2018 Film Festival and won the Best Documentary award.

The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith (2015)

Between 1957 and 1965, former LIFE Magazine photographer, W. Eugene Smith, took pictures and audio recordings of tons of jazz musicians jamming in a New York loft next to his. Directed by Sara Fishko, The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith shows an intimate look into a decade of the story of jazz. It’s an extension of the award-winning “Jazz Loft Radio Series” that Fishko produced for WNYC in 2009.

McQueen (2018)

Alexander McQueen is one of the biggest names in the fashion industry. This documentary gives viewers a more personal look into his life and career, narrated by interviews with his friends and family. According to Harper’s Bazaar, “this latest documentary is among the most accurate, sensitive and moving“. It was nominated for 11 awards, including one from London Critics Circle as the AFLS Circle Documentary of the Year. It won the Dorian Award for LGBTQ Documentary of the Year.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)

Rachel Brosnahan gives an Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Midge Maisel in this Amazon Prime Video original series produced by Gilmore Girls duo Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. It tells the story of a charismatic 1950s housewife who becomes a stand-up comic after being left by her husband. The series was also created by Sherman-Palladino, who was inspired by her father and her own admiration for early female comics.

Fleabag (2016)

This Amazon Prime Video series is clever and funny and has won several awards over the years. Fleabag tells the story of a young woman who has to deal with life after a tragedy. It was originally a one-woman show by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also plays the title role in the adaptation.

Downton Abbey (2010)

Downton Abbey premiered in 2010. From then to 2016, it followed the lives of a fictional British aristocratic family in the early 20th century. It’s a majorly successful tv series, so big it even got a film sequel, released just a few weeks ago.

The New Yorker Presents (2015)

The New Yorker Presents is an Amazon Prime Video original series that brings pieces from the magazine to the screen. You can find anything from documentaries to their famous cartoons, adapted by acclaimed filmmakers and artists.
