What turns a movie into a classic, you ask? The fact that no matter how old they are or how many times people have seen them, we all love them just the same. We’ve put together a list of can’t-miss classic movies you’ll just want to cuddle up and marathon.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Breakfast at Tiffany’s was originally a Truman Capote novella. The 1961 screen adaptation, starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, is a major classic movie. The story shows Holly Golightly as a New York City escort who is looking for a rich husband. She meets a young man, who moves into her building, who wants to be a writer. Hepburn’s Holly Golightly is one of the most iconic characters of the decade, with her whole hat, sunglasses, little black dress ensemble. But even after 60 years, Tiffany’s can still scare the mean reds away.
The Graduate
The Graduate gives us a young Dustin Hoffman playing a recent college graduate. He is trying to avoid the big questions about his future and gets involved with an older woman. Then, he falls in love with her daughter. This is a movie that checks all the boxes: drama, comedy and a great soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The film stars Harrison Ford, mid-Star Wars craze, as archaeology professor Dr. Indiana Jones. He tries to get to a unique religious relic before the Nazis to ruin their plans for world domination. It was the highest-grossing film of 1981 and started a great franchise that branches into different types of media and is still in production to this day. Raiders of the Lost Ark may be the first of four (soon to be five) Indiana Jones movies, and also qualifies as a classic movie for being absolutely timeless.
Sixteen Candles
Further into the 1980s, we got this classic coming-of-age movie by John Hughes on his directorial debut. Molly Ringwald plays Sam Baker, whose 16th birthday gets overshadowed by her older sister’s wedding. This was the first of Ringwald’s many John Hughes films, which made him king of 80’s teen movies and granted her a spot in the Brat Pack.
Back to the Future
Michael J. Fox plays Marty McFly in this sci-fi adventure. He accidentally travels thirty years into the past aboard a time-machine, built out of a DeLorean by eccentric scientist Dr. Emmett Brown. He meets his future parents. Well, actually, he has to make his parents meet, otherwise, he won’t exist. Great Scott! But then Marty and Doc work together so he can go back to the future and everything can be fine again. This classic movie started a beloved trilogy that follows the duo in other time-traveling escapades.
